Piazza Castello – Public square

Taranto – IT

Client: Municipality of Taranto

Status: ongoing

Size: 8.800 mq

The public area between the Aragonese Castle, the City Palace, the Temple of Poseidon and the Palace of Stani, like almost the entire Old Town of Taranto, is presented as a mosaic of eras and projects ranging from Magna Graecia to medieval architecture, from Renaissance and neoclassical palaces to twentieth-century additions.

The redevelopment project of Piazza Castello represents an important challenge: not only in terms of spatial reconfiguration of the areas, but also in the search for a new urban identity with the aim of halting the gradual process of deterioration that has characterized the Old Town in recent decades through a renewed integration of public space, urban landscape and natural landscape.

The project area, in fact, has all the characteristics and potential to become the true Gateway to the Old Town, and this can only be achieved through the creation of a new organic system of public spaces that enhances and harmoniously balances the many historical-architectural features present , which privileges the use of the areas through an increase in pedestrian areas and that develops and promotes the city's tourist-cultural proposal.
